Derrick Morgan – Jamaica’s First King Of Ska

Derrick Seymour Morgan was there at the dawn of the modern Jamaican recording industry, since which time he has recorded numerous major hits in a variety of styles, ranging from  fifties shuffle blues to eighties dancehall.

International recognition finally arrived early in 1970 when his skinhead favourite, ‘Moon Hop’ punctured the British top 50 chart despite virtually no radio airplay.

A prolonged spell recording for brother-in-law, Bunny Lee produced a succession of popular singles and albums well into the eighties, although simnce then Derrick has gradullay eased off from recorded work, spending long periods in Canada and the UK.
