The first volume of Rebel Music released some 28 years ago is widely acknowledged as the first serious retrospective compilation of Jamaican music.

Compiled by Trojan‘s A&R manager of the day, Dave Hendley, it challenged peoples perceptions of reggae anthologies. Unlike everything that had gone before it comprised not of the well known crossover hits but of songs that were then little known beyond the confines of hard core reggae aficionados.
Issued at the end of the punk era and on the precipice of the 2-Tone ska revival, the original album’s purpose was simply to expose this hitherto underappreciated music to a wider audience.
Hendley has always acknowledged that it was a very personal collection of the songs he loved and was compiled much in the way that you would make a tape for friends. For many people it became the starting point for their appreciation of Jamaican music.

In 2002 Hendley gave the album a make over for Trojan, tweaking the track listing and changing the garish original artwork, which he had always loathed. Rebel Music once again found new ears. When reviewed in July 2002 the NME gave it 10 out of 10 saying, ‘ Play this next time some know-nothing tells you they don’t like reggae. It brooks little argument.’
In 2005 Q magazine gave it the accolade of a great moment in compiling.

Nearly three decades later Dave Hendley has finally put together Rebel Music Vol. 2. Once again it is the simple formula of unfamiliar yet exceptional songs carefully compiled to convey his very personal perspective on the music.
